First Team Truro 1 v Penzance 1 Truro 1st team commenced the defence of their 2006 & 2007 Cornish League titles against last season’s runners up Penzance. Truro have been strengthened by the return of Luke Vaggers and the team will hoping to repeat their 2007 achievements by ending the season once again unbeaten in the League. Playing first, Truro current number 1 Neil Counter played County 1 Chris Davey. Neil was desperate to win the match and started strongly. It looked like it could be his night. Chris however showed his experience and despite obviously tiring with Neils' ability to retrieve near impossible balls and his constant running, the Penzance player came through a 3-1 winner. Pete Madsen was next on for Truro hoping to bring the match back in Truro’s favour. Thankfully he did not disappoint against the experienced Gordon Mackie and despite the Penzance player playing some great shots Pete was able to continue playing to his own strengths and win 3-0. At 3 For Truro Elliott Moore was to play Ian Hatch. This should have been a comfortable match for Elliott but was far from it. Ian battled hard and should have won the second as he led 8-1, but thankfully Elliott dug in to win that game 10-9 and from there the result was never in doubt, 3-0 to Truro. Last on was Luke Vaggers, playing a 2 for Truro because of his current Count ranking but clearly the best player in the side. Pete Eddy of Penzance was the unfortunate victim – despite Pete playing well Luke won the 1st two games 9-0 9-0. With Luke leading 5-0 in the third game a sympathetic referee awarded Pete a generous stroke (point) and Pete thereafter managed to win 2 more points, losing the third 9-3. Embarrassment avoided for Pete but another 3-0 win for Truro. On the night Truro won the tie 3 matches to 1 and by 13 points to 3. Truro 1 next entertain Newquay at the Truro Club on Thursday 11th October at 1900. For anyone interested in squash or thinking about taking it up come down to the club to watch. There are also details at the Club regarding lessons for those who want to give it a go – it’s a great sport and a great way to get fit.
