First Team

Newquay 1 v Truro 1

Truro 1 travelled to Newquay for the top of the table clash between the 2 sides. Newquay were weakened by the absence of regular number 1 Andy Keeling but Truro were also missing 2 regular 1st team players, Pete Madsen & Mark Taylor, former Team Captain Dave Smith stepping in to play at the 11th hour.

Dave Smith was 1st on against Russ Harvey. A close 1st game saw Dave showing some of his superior shot playing ability for the Truro player to win & get the 1st point of the night. Sadly the Newquay player came out on top winning the next 3 tight games to secure the match 3-1.

Olly Foot at 3 for Truro was to play Matt Waterton. Olly was hoping to regain some form after some recent indifferent performances despite having won all his previous matches. Matt was playing some very good squash but Olly was soon to get the measure of his opponent cutting out errors & letting Matt make the mistakes to lead 2-0. Easing off the pressure in the 3rd game Matt pulled one back. The 4th game was very tight but eventually Olly came through to win 3-1. All square with 2 matches to play.

Truro 2 Elliott Moore played Dave Priem. Dave won the first game easily, putting away easily any loose shots by Elliott. A tetchy 2nd game looked to be heading the Newquay player’s way but somehow Elliott started to play the squash that has seen him unbeaten in the league this year to save game point and recover to snatch the game. Again in the third game Dave’s fitness started to lapse letting Elliott come back to win. The Truro player secured the win – 3 - 1.

With Truro needing 2 games to win on the night Truro 1 Neil Counter played Adam Bailey. Adam won the 1st before the Truro player found his stride to win the next 3 games relatively comfortably, Adam struggling to keep up with the pace & retrieving ability of Neil.

The match was Truro’s, 13 – 6 but the result could have been very different.

The League now makes for attractive viewing for Truro 1, still unbeaten with 4 matches left to play & Truro now a minimum of 15 points ahead of Newquay & 23 points clear of Penzance – but this could all change with 15 points available in each match.
